  • Faz

    A Journal of Theoretical Linguistics for Early-Career Researchers.

    One structure. One question. One node. At most 3,000 words. Peer-reviewed. Open access.

    Faz is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that publishes, in the format of short articles, the work of undergraduate and graduate students and other early-career researchers in theoretical linguistics. Faz is published under the auspices of the Department of Linguistics at İstanbul Medeniyet University and is run by students: its editorial board consists of graduate students and other early-career researchers and works under the guidance of an Advisory Board of academics. Faz thus offers early-career researchers not only the opportunity to publish a first article, but also the opportunity to experience every stage of academic publishing, namely authorship, reviewing and editing, within a rigorous framework.

    The format of Faz serves this purpose. Each article addresses a single theoretical question and runs to at most 3,000 words; the limit leads the researcher to define the problem clearly and to argue for the proposal directly.

    The name of the journal draws on two references. In minimalist syntax, a phase is a unit of the derivation: once a phase is complete, the domain of its head is transferred to the interfaces and becomes inaccessible to operations outside the phase, leaving only the head and its edge accessible (the Phase Impenetrability Condition; Chomsky 2000). A phase is also a stage of development, one through which a young researcher passes on the way to academic maturity. Faz enables early-career researchers to complete their first experience of academic publication, that first phase, to the standards of an established journal.
