About the Journal

Aims and Scope

Faz publishes original short articles in all areas of theoretical linguistics, including syntax, semantics, phonology, morphology, pragmatics and the interfaces between them. The journal considers studies that address a theoretical question and argue explicitly for an analysis, as well as experimental and corpus studies that test a theoretical proposal. Studies drawing on Turkish and the other languages of Türkiye are particularly welcome; the journal is not restricted to any language or language family.

Authors

Faz is intended for researchers at the beginning of their academic careers, from undergraduate students to those who received their doctorate within the last three years. The first author of a submitted article must be enrolled in an undergraduate, master's or doctoral programme, or have received a doctorate no more than three years before submission. Supervisors and senior researchers may appear as co-authors.

Format

Faz publishes squibs, the short-article format of theoretical linguistics. A squib addresses a single theoretical question, states its proposal explicitly and runs to at most 3,000 words, excluding references and appendices. Articles may be written in Turkish or English; every peer-reviewed article carries an abstract and keywords in both languages.

Sections

Besides squibs, Faz publishes three further kinds of contribution. Data & Puzzles contributions present a single observation, such as a new datum or an unnoticed pattern that current analyses mispredict, and show why it matters for theory; they need not propose a solution. Remarks & Replies continues the discussion of published work: a remark tests a published claim, and a reply answers a remark. Commentaries are invited, reviewed by two editors and marked on publication as not peer-reviewed.

Editorial Structure

The editorial board of Faz consists of graduate students and other early-career researchers from any university. The editors carry out the pre-review of submissions, select reviewers, oversee the review process and prepare a recommendation based on the reviewers' reports. The Advisory Board consists of senior academics; it advises the editorial board on method, publication ethics and the review process, and takes over the review of any article in which a conflict of interest arises. Language editors edit accepted articles for language before publication. An editorial office of students at İstanbul Medeniyet University supports the editors with technical checks, correspondence and outreach; it takes no editorial decisions. The editor-in-chief is responsible for the final decision on every article.

Review Process

Every submission first undergoes an editorial pre-review, which checks its fit with the journal's scope, format and style rules and includes a similarity check. Articles that pass the pre-review undergo double-anonymous review by at least two reviewers, at least one of whom holds a doctorate. Reviewers are expected to write detailed, constructive reports that help early-career authors develop their work. After consulting the Advisory Board, the editor-in-chief decides, on the basis of the reports and the handling editor's recommendation, whether to accept the article, return it for revision or reject it. Faz aims to tell authors within seven days of submission whether their article has been sent out for review, and to reach a first decision after review within six weeks of submission.

Publication Frequency

Faz publishes one volume a year on a continuous model: each accepted article appears in the current volume as soon as it is ready, without waiting for an issue to be completed.

Open Access and Fees

All articles published in Faz are freely available from the moment of publication. The journal charges authors no fees for submission, review or publication.
