Author Guidelines

General Principles

  • An article submitted to Babble must not have been published before and must not be under review elsewhere. Work derived from a thesis or presented at a scholarly meeting is accepted, provided that this is stated in a note on the first page.
  • Articles may be written in Turkish or English. Turkish articles follow the spelling guide (Yazım Kılavuzu) of the Turkish Language Association.
  • Babble charges authors no fees for submission, review or publication.

Article Types

  • Short theoretical note: at most 3,000 words, excluding references. Every note contains a mandatory “Thesis” section that states a defensible claim about an artwork, phenomenon or concept.
  • Invited article: at most 8,000 words, excluding references. Invited articles are written at the editors’ invitation and undergo double-blind review like the short notes.
  • Both types are published as original research articles; the type of each article is given in the table of contents and on the first page of the article.

Title, Abstract and Keywords

  • Every article carries a title in Turkish and in English, an abstract of at most 150 words in each language, and three to five keywords.
  • For English articles by authors who do not know Turkish, the journal prepares the Turkish title, abstract and keywords.

Layout of the Text

  • The text is prepared in Microsoft Word (.docx) format, in 12-point type with 1.5 line spacing.
  • Headings are unnumbered and used at no more than two levels.
  • Images and tables are numbered in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text (Image 1, Table 1). Image captions appear below the image, table titles above the table.
  • Explanatory notes are given as footnotes and kept to a minimum; footnotes are not used for citations.

Images

  • Every image carries a caption: artist, title of the work, date, medium, dimensions, collection or location; then the photograph and copyright credit.
  • The author obtains permission to publish images of works still in copyright; the permissions are sent to the journal on request.
  • Images are submitted as separate files, at least 2,000 pixels on the long side.

References

  • Citations and references follow the author-date system of The Chicago Manual of Style (18th edition): (Surname 2020, 45).
  • The reference list includes only works cited in the text; the DOI of every source that has one is given.

Declarations

The following declarations appear at the end of the article, before the references. During review, any information that could reveal the author’s identity is masked; the declarations are given in full once the article has been accepted.

  • Research and Publication Ethics Statement: that research and publication ethics were observed in the preparation of the work; for research that requires ethics committee approval, the name of the committee and the date and number of its decision; for research that does not, a statement to that effect (see Publication Ethics).
  • Author Contributions: for articles with more than one author, the contribution of each author to the work (for example conceptualisation, research, writing, editing).
  • Funding and Acknowledgements: the institutions or projects that supported the work and the people who are thanked, or a statement that no support was received.
  • Conflict of Interest Statement: whether the authors have any conflict of interest related to the work.
  • Statement on the Use of AI: where generative AI tools were used, the tool and the purpose of its use.

Submission

  • The article is submitted through the journal’s system as a file without author information. Self-references that could reveal the author’s identity are masked in the file as “Author (year)”.
  • Author information is given on a separate title page: the title of the article in Turkish and in English; the authors’ names, affiliations (department, institution, city, country), email addresses and ORCID iDs; the corresponding author; the declarations.
  • An ORCID iD is required for every author; the ORCID iDs are also entered in the submission form.

Publication

  • Accepted articles are typeset after copy-editing by the language editor; the author proofreads the typeset text before publication.
  • The first page of the article gives its type, the dates of receipt and acceptance, and the authors’ affiliations, email addresses and ORCID iDs.
  • Articles are published under the CC BY-NC 4.0 licence, the authors retaining copyright.

Submission Preparation Checklist

Your submission must meet the following requirements.

  • The article has not been published before and is not under review with another journal.
  • The article follows the length, format and citation rules of the Author Guidelines; short notes contain the mandatory “Thesis” section.
  • The article file contains no author information; self-references have been masked.
  • A title, an abstract (at most 150 words) and three to five keywords are given in Turkish and in English.
  • The affiliations, email addresses and ORCID iDs of all authors have been entered in the submission form, and a separate title page is attached.
  • The title page contains the Research and Publication Ethics, Author Contributions, Funding and Acknowledgements, and Conflict of Interest statements, with the details of ethics committee approval where required.
  • Permission has been obtained to publish images of works still in copyright and other third-party material, and every image has a caption.
  • Any use of AI tools is stated in the declarations.

Short Articles

This section is dedicated to short, sharp, and provocative texts (maximum 3,000 words, excluding references) that engage directly with the theoretical discourses of contemporary art. Every submission must include a distinct and mandatory “Thesis” section articulating a definitive claim regarding an artwork, phenomenon, or concept. Submissions lacking a clear, defensible thesis will be declined prior to review. All published texts undergo double-blind review by at least two reviewers.

Invited Articles

Reserved for extended theoretical and critical essays by invited authors (maximum 8,000 words, excluding references). Each volume includes one invited article. While exempt from the length limit of the Short Articles section, invited articles are expected to maintain the journal’s commitment to theoretical depth, experimental boldness and critical rigour, and they undergo the same double-blind review by at least two reviewers.
