Author Guidelines
General Principles
- An article submitted to Babble must not have been published before and must not be under review elsewhere. Work derived from a thesis or presented at a scholarly meeting is accepted, provided that this is stated in a note on the first page.
- Articles may be written in Turkish or English. Turkish articles follow the spelling guide (Yazım Kılavuzu) of the Turkish Language Association.
Formats
- Short theoretical note: at most 3,000 words, excluding references. Every note contains a mandatory “Thesis” section that states a defensible claim about an artwork, phenomenon or concept.
- Invited article: at most 8,000 words, excluding references. Invited articles are written at the editors’ invitation and undergo double-blind review like the short notes.
- Every article carries an abstract of at most 150 words and three to five keywords in both languages.
Images
- Every image carries a caption: artist, title of the work, date, medium, dimensions, collection or location; then the photograph and copyright credit.
- The author obtains permission to publish images of works still in copyright; the permissions are sent to the journal on request.
- Images are submitted as separate files, at least 2,000 pixels on the long side.
References
- Citations and references follow the author-date system of The Chicago Manual of Style (18th edition): (Surname 2020, 45).
Submission
- The article is submitted through the journal’s system as a file without author information. The authors’ names, affiliations, email addresses and ORCID iDs are entered only in the submission form.
- Self-references that could reveal the author’s identity are masked in the file as “Author (year)”.
Submission Preparation Checklist
All submissions must meet the following requirements.
- This submission meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
- This submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
- All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness.
- All tables and figures have been numbered and labeled.
- Permission has been obtained to publish all photos, datasets and other material provided with this submission.
Short Articles
This section is dedicated to short, sharp, and provocative texts (maximum 3,000 words, excluding references) that engage directly with the theoretical discourses of contemporary art. Every submission must include a distinct and mandatory “Thesis” section articulating a definitive claim regarding an artwork, phenomenon, or concept. Submissions lacking a clear, defensible thesis will be declined prior to review. All published texts undergo double-blind review by at least two reviewers.
Invited Articles
Reserved for extended theoretical and critical essays by invited authors (maximum 8,000 words, excluding references). Each volume includes one invited article. While exempt from the length limit of the Short Articles section, invited articles are expected to maintain the journal’s commitment to theoretical depth, experimental boldness and critical rigour, and they undergo the same double-blind review by at least two reviewers.
